RETIREMENT

THE CHANGING FACE OF RETIREMENT
By Nancy Abramson

Retirement today is not the retirement that our Grandfathers and Grandmothers had or our Mothers and Fathers. Today people are living longer and often look at retirement as a time to do something they have always wanted to do or to work less hours. They may work part time, take a temporary position, or work as a contractor or consultant to supplement their income. Many people retire from the profession they worked in while supporting a family and now want to get in touch with a more satisfying life.

According to the AARP 2002 survey 69% of the people who are retiring will work. 34% want to work part time in a job of their interest that they enjoy, and 19% will work part time to supplement their income. 28% of the people will not work at all and 2% do not know.

The AARP survey measured why people work in Retirement.
76% Work because they need the money
76% Enjoy working
68% Want to help others
66% Feel useful
65% Maintain health insurance
59% Feel they should work if they can
56% Work to pay for health care
49% Qualify for pension.

According to the 1990 census there were about 36,000 centenarians in the United States alone. By the 2000 census the number was estimated to be 51,000. In addition, the number of centenarians age 110 and older was estimated to be 1,400. By 2030 the number of centenarians is projected to be 324,000.

If you are looking to retire at age 60 or 65, you could have 15 to 40 years in retirement. Looking at how and where you want to live, what you want to do and how much money you will need after retirement age is an important step to living a fulfilled retirement life. Planning for your future before retirement will help you create the life you desire.
